Former Assam chief minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Friday filed his nomination papers from the Badampur assembly constituency in Assam's Nagaon district.

Mahanta, along with his supporters, reached the Deputy Commissioner's office to file his papers.

Besides Mahanta, AGP chief Chandra Mohan Patowary also filed his papers for the second phase on the penultimate day for filing of papers.

Coming out of the DC office, Mahanta said, "We have joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) for the assembly elections in Assam, I have filed my papers according to seat-sharing between us. I need well wishes of the people to win the elections."

The 126-seat Assam assembly goes to polls on April 4. The state will witness two-phase voting with the second phase of voting taking place on 11 April. The votes will be counted on 19 May. The tenure of Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government comes to end in June.
