According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film is based on a true story and stars Tom Hanks as an American lawyer who agrees to help the CIA rescue a pilot being detained in the Soviet Union.
Stowell will play the role of pilot, Francis Gary Powers whose spy plane was shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960 and he was captured and sentenced to 10 years in prison that prompted U.S. government to attempt to get him home.
The movie is produced by 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks with Fox handling international distribution and Disney will handle the domestic distribution.
The project is Stowell's second with Spielberg, following TNT's "Public Morals", which the acclaimed filmmaker is executive producing.
