Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has confirmed that the country will extend its campaign of airstrikes from Iraq into Syria, adding that Australia would accept extra 12,000 refugees affected by the conflict.

According to ABC News, Abbott said that the refugee sanctuaries for resettlement would be made permanent.

The Government of Australia will also provide an extra amount of 44 million dollars for refugee agencies.

The Prime Minister stressed the Coalition must move beyond a purely humanitarian response and brace up for military operation in Syria.
