Bedi promises people a 'Good Delhi' before filing her nomination

The Bharatiya Janata Party's chief ministerial candidate for Delhi and former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Kiran Bedi on Wednesday promised to provide the people of the national capital with what she called a "Good Delhi", as she believed the city's residents deserved nothing but the best of facilities.

Addressing media before heading to the Krishna Nagar constituency to file her nomination to contest the polls, Bedi, said, "Our Delhi can become a good Delhi. We (BJP) will do good practices. We will ask for a security perception index survey. That will tell us which area has more insecurity and which area has more security. This will probably be the first time Delhi will see the security perception index."

She also said that the she was all in favour of every state having a security perception index.

Giving a hint of her administrative plans should the BJP and she be elected to govern the city, Bedi said, "We will be moving very fast. Every department will have White Paper. We will measure where each department stands. All that is good will carry on, and all that is needed will be added."

The former police officer and social activist felt that there was a divine reason for her to serve the city by and with heart.

"It is the city of destiny and I have seen it from the age of 14. Now, government and civil society will work together," she said.

Bedi was speaking on the last day for the filing of nominations for assembly elections in Delhi.

The scrutiny of nominations will take place tomorrow, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is January 24.

Polling will take place on February 7 and the counting of votes will be taken up on February 10.

Apart from Bedi, several senior leaders will be filing their nomination papers today, including Aam Aadmi Party Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Congress campaign chief Ajay Maken.

While going to file her nomination, Bedi will lead a road show through East Delhi, including the Krishna Nagar constituency, which is a BJP stronghold.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan had successfully contested the last assembly elections from the Krishna Nagar seat.

Kejriwal will file his nominations from the New Delhi assembly constituency today after he failed to meet the deadline for filing the nominations yesterday due to his road show.

Meanwhile, the BJP, last night, declared its remaining four candidates and left four other seats for its ally Shiromani Akali Dal.

The BJP had, on Monday, declared a total of 62 candidates for the 70 member Delhi assembly.

In a statement, BJP General Secretary J P Nadda said that the Central Election Committee has decided to field Sanjay Singh from Vikaspur Assembly seat, Nandani Sharma from Malviya Nagar, Sarita Chaudhary from Mehrauli and Rakesh Gulia from Greater Kailash constituency.

He said the BJP has decided to leave Rajouri Garden, Hari Nagar, Kalkaji and Shahdara seats for the Akali Dal which also announced its candidates yesterday.

For the Akali Dal, Avtar Singh Hit will contest from Hari Nagar, Harmeet Singh Kalka from Kalkaji, Jatinder Singh Shunty from Shahdara and Manjinder Singh Sirsa from Rajouri Garden for Akali Dal.
