The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday lashed out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra home minister RR Patil over his comment that MNS candidate Sudhakar Khade could have committed rape after the state assembly elections.

"What kind of an insensitive statement is this? It is highly objectionable and that too coming from someone who has been a Home Minister," BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli told ANI.

"What happened to the NCP? Even earlier R R Patil had come up with another statement on rape. Ajit Pawar had made a statement that 'how can fill the irrigation tanks'. This is the opportunity for the people of Maharashtra to vote out these 15 years of inept government," he added.

Patil, who stoked a controversy with his comment that an MNS candidate for the assembly polls jailed for the offence could have waited for elections to get over before committing the crime, later went into damage control after his statement drew sharp criticism.

The former Maharashtra home minister reportedly said that he made the comment in a sarcastic vein and tendered an apology if anybody felt hurt.
