British boxing ace Amir Khan has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of assaulting two men in Bolton as they were returning from a mosque.

The former world champion boxer was arrested in the early hours of Friday after the incident in his hometown Bolton where two men where hurt but not seriously injured.

The Guardian reports that the alleged assault happened on Russell Street in Heaton after Khan pulled up alongside a group of men in a Mercedes C-class.

Both the victims are reportedly known to Khan and aged 19.

One of the alleged victims is said to have suffered an injury to his cheek and the other to his leg.

Witnesses claimed that the incident started when a member of the group was accused of making comments to a friend of Khan's, with one witness saying that she had seen the boxer get out of the car and then he drove off and there was a man on the floor.

A spokesperson for the boxer confirmed that he had been arrested and said that Khan was arrested on suspicion of common assault on Friday, adding that the boxer has since been released without charge on bail pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said that officers attended Russell Street and discovered two 19-year-old men had been assaulted, adding that their injuries are not serious.
