Brussels Police on Tuesday fired on explosive laden car and arrested the driver.
Police were alarmed after the driver was driving suspiciously and failed to stop at a traffic light.
According to media reports, several police officers shot at the wheels of the car, reported to be a Citroen Picasso registered in Germany, before the driver was arrested.
As soon as the driver was pulled out by the police officers, he said that there were explosives in the car.
The security alert took place in the suburb of Molenbeek this afternoon.
The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office released a statement confirming the suspect's arrest at 6pm local time (5pm BST).
A security perimeter was set up between Rue de Dilbeek and the Gare de l'Ouest, according to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
No injuries were reported.
At the time of filing this report, it was not confirmed whether the incident was terror-related.
Brussels is on high alert following last year's ISIS attacks in the city which left 32 people dead and more than 300 others injured.
