The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has welcomed the Cabinet nod for Labour Law Reforms in a few important acts as reported in the media today.

"The quick action has demonstrated the Government's strong commitment towards pushing key labour reforms to encourage economic growth and generate employment opportunities in the country," said. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII.

CII has been recommending key reforms in laws like the Factories Act, Industrial Disputes Act and others for bringing in simplification and flexibility in engagement and deployment of labour, which should be the two key cornerstones for any labour law reforms.

One of the key amendments which CII has been advocating for long has been flexibility in deciding on working hours and overtime depending on fluctuating business requirements. CII had suggested complete flexibility in overtime decisions.

However the decision of the Govt. to double the overtime to 100 hrs from 50 hours per quarter is a welcome move and has demonstrated that the Government understands the changing dynamics of the business environment.

Other measures such as allowing women workers in night shift, reducing the compliance burden of small and micro enterprises and amending the Apprenticeship Act, 1961 had all been recommended by CII. These steps will certainly open up more job opportunities for the youth.
