Coming down heavily on Yogi Adityanath for 'disrespecting' Indian women, the Congress on Monday took a swing at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying his advocacy on women empowerment fell flat thanks to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's actions.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala slammed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for writing an article demeaning the position of women in the society.
"According to Yogi ji, women become demons if they have quality of men. The article on his website disrespects women. So how will he explain his position about Rani Lakshmi Bai or Goddess Durga and Goddess kali," the Congress leader said.
"We demand Yogi Adityanath ji remove this article from the website yogiadityanath.in and apologise to the women of the nation for his remarks against them," he added.
He further took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, "The Prime Minister yesterday was talking of women development and now his ministers are belittling women. I would like to ask are independent women are destructive?" he said.
Raising the 'triple talaq' issue, Prime Minister Modi had said justice should be done to Muslim women and asked the BJP to reach out to the backward sections in the community over his government's bill to accord constitutional status to the OBC Commission.
Last week Prime Minister Modi announced that women are free to retain their maiden names in their passports now after the marriage.
Stating that he wanted women to be at the centre of the developmental schemes, Prime Minister Modi said his government is working in different ways to empower them through various schemes like Mudra and Ujjwala, among others.
