Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha on Thursday claimed that the Congress Party only remembers the plight of farmers when it is not in power, and dismissed Rahul Gandhi's 'padyatra' through the state as a mere attempt to give a boost to the cadre of the grand old party.
"For so many years, the Congress Party not only ruled Telangana, but also India as a whole. Yet, they have never been able to stop farmer suicides. We feel that the Congress has hit an all-time low, and thus, they are going all over the country to give a boost to their cadre," Kavitha told ANI.
"The farmers' plight is an issue that is country-wide. This problem is always suffered by the regions that are arid. Whenever the Congress is not in power, they remember the farmers' plight," she added.
Kavitha also said that in the short time that it has been in power, the TRS has done much to alleviate the plight of the farmers.
"It has been only 12 months since we came to power but we have done a lot of work. We have provided them with fertilisers, water, electricity around the clock... if you want to politicise the issue, then you are more than welcome," she said.
Rahul Gandhi will be meeting the family members of famers who committed suicide in Telangana, as well as addressing farmers' woes. He will also undertake a 15-kilometre-long padyatra here.
Last month, the Congress vice-president conducted similar padyatras to address farmers' issues in Punjab and Maharashtra.
