The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said the Congress should accept its 'incompetence' for not being able to bring former IPL chief Lalit Modi back to India, during its regime and alleged that the UPA did not do enough over the matter.
"A desperate Congress is trying to create some confusion. People of the country know the reality. If Lalit Modi had any friends at the ruling administration at the Centre, it was during UPA tenure. He was close friends with many top ministers in the UPA government. Possibly that was the reason that for four years UPA did not do enough to bring Lalit Modi back to India," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao told ANI.
"It is the Congress party which has to accept the culpability or accept their incompetence for not being able to bring Lalit Modi back. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has nothing to do with people like Lalit Modi," he added.
The Congress had on Friday said there was a need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to get off his 'Lalitaasan' as soon as possible and take steps to come clean on the move by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to facilitate travel documents for the former IPL czar.
Lalit Modi's legal counsel Mehmood Abdi had earlier claimed that the former IPL chief was being hounded by the UPA Government both in India and during his extended stay in London.
