Fast bowler Stuart Broad has said that the day-night Test between England and West Indies beginning Thursday at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground is a "step into the unknown".

It will be England's first ever day-night Test and the fifth in international cricket anywhere.

"I promise you, we are stepping into the unknown," the Guardian quoted Broad as saying.

"I just don't know what to expect. This is a big series for us and this is the first Test - it's quite nerve-racking. You're playing something that is completely unknown to you but you still have to stamp your authority on the series. I think it really opens up this series to start with," he added.

The inaugural day-night Test match was played at the Adelaide in November 2015 between Australia and New Zealand. The Aussies have also beaten South Africa and Pakistan in the same format.

The other day-night Test match in international cricket involved the West Indies, who were beaten by Pakistan in October 2016.

The Joe Root-led side are coming on the back of a 3-1 series victory over South Africa and would be brimming with confidence when they face West Indies in the three-match Test series.

On the other hand, West Indies have lost six consecutive Test series, their last win coming against Bangladesh in 2014.
