Spain football manager Vicente del Bosque has confirmed he is stepping down from the post just three days after his side's last 16 exit from the European Championship.

The reigning champions' hopes of securing their third consecutive Euro title were dented after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands Italy in their pre-quarters clash.

Although Spain's elimination is expected to be the reason behind Del Bosque's decision, he claimed to have already prepared his mind not to continue as the team's manager much before the tournament .

"Without a doubt, I have no intention to remain as coach, but you have to be discreet. No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would be," the 65-year-old was quoted as saying by goal.com.

Del Bosque will end his hugely successful eight-year spell with the national team on the expiry of his contract next month.

Sevilla and Athletic coach Joaquin Caparros is likely to succeed Del Bosque as England's new manager.

Del Bosque, who replaced Luis Aragones as Spain manager in 2008, led the side to World Cup glory in 2010.
