South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said he 'felt sorry for God', as he celebrated his 82nd birthday on Monday.

Tutu made the brief reference to the strife in Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He also introduced former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, who delivered the 3rd annual Desmond Tutu International Peace lecture at the University of the Western Cape, news24 reports.

According to the report, Tutu said what it must be like for God who was looking down, saying those are my children in Syria, those using chemical weapons are my children, those dying are my children.
