Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Wednesday said that it is difficult to attribute incessant rains in Chennai to climate change, and urged the Central and Tamil Nadu governments to provide necessary relief to the people of that state.
"It is very difficult to say that the rainfall is due to climate change. All we know is that the global temperature is rising due to climate change. These are the worst rains in the last 100 years. The state and centre should pay attention to it," Singh told ANI.
"The residential areas are witnessing water logging because the drainage system is clogged, urban planners should pay attention to it," he added.
Earlier, IMD Director General L S Rathore said that although the intensity of rain will lessen after 72 hours, it will continue to pour for about a week.
Many parts of Chennai and the suburbs have been flooded from the incessant rains that have hit the city in the past 24 hours, amidst the worst ever flood situation in Tamil Nadu.
The water has entered inside houses in the low-lying areas of Anna nagar and there is water-logging in almost every part of the city.
The flight operations at the Chennai Airport have been closed for the whole day because of the flooded water on the runway.
