England batting mainstay Joe Root has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team with a view to rebuild the fortunes of the national side.

Andrew Strauss, who took charge as England cricket director, said that time had come to bring Root into a leadership role.

Describing Root as a 'strong voice' in the dressing room, Strauss said that the decision to name him as Alastair Cook's deputy was a strategic one, Sport24 reported.

Strauss also insisted that Cook was the right man to lead the England team, adding that it was great to see him come back to form in the West Indies.
