Fishermen in Tamil Nadu will be able to venture to sea from midnight today, as the 45 days ban in the eastern coastal zone comes to an end.
The ban to use mechanized boats for fishing was imposed to safeguard fish during their breeding season. The ban imposed under the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Regulation Act, 1983 had begun on April 15 and will end tonight.
The ban during the breeding season helps replenish the fish stock in the sea by preventing large-scale netting of young fish and eggs.
The fishermen in Nagapattinam, Akkarapettai, Rameswaram and Jagadapattinam are busy getting their fishing boats ready by filling diesel and stocking ice boxes.
The fishermen are expecting a good catch as they are venturing into sea after one and a half months.
