Roger Ailes, one of the most powerful television executives in the U.S. and the former chairman and CEO of Fox News died at the age of 77 today.

Ailes' wife Elizabeth confirmed the news in a statement.

"I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning. Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many. He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise-and to give back," Drudge Report quoted Elizabeth as saying in a statement.

During a career that stretched over more than five decades, his work in entertainment, in politics, and in news affected the lives of many millions. And so even as we mourn his death, we celebrate his life...," the report added.

Ailes has often been embroiled in sexual harassment claims. At least 20 women have accused Ailes of sexual harassment.

According to Guardian, Alies received a USD 40 million payout for his departure from Fox News and was to remain as a consultant to the network till 2018.

The departure followed by that of his star presenter Bill O'Reilly, who was also forced out over claims of sexual harassment.

New York Times reported that Alis and Bill O'Reilly had recently paid five women a total of $13 million to settle harassment claims.

Ailes' was also an adviser to the Donald Trump campaign in 2016, where he assisted him with debate preparation.

Ailes' career in television began in Cleveland and Philadelphia, where he started as Property Assistant (1962), Producer (1965), and Executive Producer (1967-68) for KYW-TV.
