Ashraf Ghani, one of the two possible candidates who will replace Hamid Karzai as the President of Afghanistan, has reportedly gone on record to say that he favors an extensive audit of votes.

According to the BBC, the statement came just before Ghani's meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is on a hastily arranged visit to Afghanistan to help resolve the current political crisis.

Ghani, who was leading the Presidential race after the second round by a margin of 56.44 percent, has called for the recounting of votes by stating that it would not only ensure transparency and integrity but will also reinstate the faith of the nation and the world in the democratic process.

Ghani's opponent Abdullah Abdullah, who was trailing behind him at 43.45 percent votes after the preliminary results were declared for the second round, had also demanded an audit earlier, alleging fraud.

Kerry who is already in the state to meet the leader has welcomed his decision. He will also meet Abdullah during this visit, the report added.
