A hoax story 'Giant asteroid possibly on collision course with Earth' was put up on CNN's website which led people to believe that the report was true.
The report was put up on a part of CNN's website known as iReport, where people post their news and CNN tries to find out if some of them are true.
Person who posted it, Marcus 575, wrote that researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have found a large object the size of Manhattan which is possibly on a collision course with Earth, CNET reported.
The person also wrote that researchers using their Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE), found that the 10-mile wide object was approximately 51 million miles from Earth.
However, one thing that made the story stand out as false was that impact was most likely to take place on March 35, 2041.
CNN has now removed the report from its website.
