'Immigrant' row: Asom Gana Parishad protests against BJP

The Asom Gana Parishad staged a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Thursday for referring to people hailing from the north-east as 'immigrants' in its vision document for the Delhi Assembly polls.

The agitation by the Asom Gana Parishad is the latest in a series of protests against the BJP in the north-eastern parts of the country.

The opposition parties, too, had criticised the BJP's 'error' and demanded an apology for the same.

The BJP, however, had expressed regret for the 'typing error' in its vision document, saying the party firmly believed that people of the north-east are proud citizens of India.

"The BJP firmly believes that our sisters and brothers of the North-East are proud citizens of India. And wherever they are, the BJP always walks the extra mile to ensure their protection and security, be it in Karnataka, in Delhi or in any part of India. So, the inadvertent mistake caused due to typing is seriously regretted," Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad told the media earlier on Wednesday.
