The Chief of 'Integrated Defence Staff' to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) was appointed on October 01, 2001 and Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) came into existence by a government letter.

The decision was taken to fulfill the need for an institutional framework for higher management of defence forces.
