Intense cold wave coupled with dense fog continued to paralyse normal life on Tuesday, disrupting, flight and train operations.
A blanket of thick fog hit rail traffic with dozens of trains running behind schedule or cancelled. The visibility dropped below 100 metres.
People were seen sitting around bonfires on pavements in Kanpur.
"It is very cold and fog is also intense. We are facing problems in finding logs for bonfire. There seems no solution to it," said a resident of Kanpur, Ram Prasad.
Meanwhile, the mercury dropped to freezing point in Shimla, leading to formation of frost on plants.
"Weather is very inclement. We have come from far off place so we find cold very troubling. Temperature is two to three degree," said a tourist, Sanjeev Thakur.
The meteorological department informed that a strong western disturbance is coming towards north-western part which will result in heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh on January 08.
An unabated cold wave also swept many places, leaving residents distressed and forced to stay within the warmer confines of their houses.
In higher altitudes, the temperature has even dropped to the sub-zero level, with some states witnessing lowest minimum temperatures.
