The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday said it would file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court's favourable verdict for Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets (DA) case.

A resolution to this effect was passed at a DMK district secretaries meeting here.

DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi said in a statement that the locus standi of his party in the DA case was twice endorsed by the apex court, and hence there was a need for the DMK to file an appeal.

"We hope the Karnataka Government will go on appeal against the judgment given by Karnataka High Court in Jayalalithaa's assets case. If the Karnataka Government fails to appeal DMK has decided, because we have locus standi, to proceed with the case," DMK leader R.S. Bharathi told ANI.

Jayalalithaa was sworn-in as the Chief Minister for the fifth time on Saturday, days after the Karnataka High Court acquitted her and three others in the DA case on May 11.

The verdict came on the appeal filed by Jayalalithaa and her three associates, including her aide Sasikala, in the case.

A trial court had on September 27 last year sentenced Jayalalithaa and three others to four years in jail and imposed a hefty fine of Rs. 100 crores on her and Rs. 10 crores each on three others.
