The second Save Rhino Walkathon was recently held in Jorhat with an aim to spread awareness about how to save Rhinos and the bio-diversity of the region.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi flagged off the event that was organised by Kaziranga University and the Department of Forests of the Assam Government.

According to a press release issued by Kaziranga University, the great one-horned Rhinoceros is the pride of Assam, and is in danger of extinction.

The trend of poaching of this rare species has become frequent of late, and is a matter of serious concern for wildlife and environment experts and observers.

The Great Save Rhino Walkathon is a product of their concern, and is a one of a kind initiative undertaken by any university.

The university started the walkathon series last year, and it has now become an important annual event in Jorhat.

Chief Minister Gogoi said that every effort must be made to save the "precious one horned rhino from extinction."

Among the other dignitaries present were the Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat, Vishal Vasant Solanki, Superintendent of Police Amarjeet Kaur, Counsellor (Cultural) Embassy of Nepal Arjun Pant and Kaziranga University Chancellor M. D. Khetan.

Thousands of animal lovers from the state participated in the event.
