Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the relevant authorities to take measures to curb the smuggling of gold out of the country.
Presiding over a special meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, Sirisena discussed the measures that needed to be taken to curb illegal gold smuggling.
The police and the tri-forces have disclosed that gold bought from the auctions at state and commercial banks was being taken illegally out of the country on a large scale, reports Colombo Page.
Officials of the Central Bank, state and commercial banks were also instructed by President Sirisena to provide accurately prepared documents on bank auctions.
Officials of the Finance Ministry and the Treasury, chiefs of tri- forces and the police, heads of state and commercial banks, and other government officials were present in the meeting.
