Like father, like son: Chanderpaul father-son duo script history

Retired West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine have created history by achieving a unique feat of making 50s in the same first-class match.

Batting for Guyana in the regional four-day tournament at Sabina Park, Jamaica, Chanderpaul brought up his 136th first-class half-century only hours after his 20-year-old son had also reached 50 on Day Two on Sunday, reports cricket.com.au.

The 20-year-old opened for Guyana and gave a strong start to the team with the help of Shimron Hetymer. He scored 58 runs, whereas Shivnarine, who came in the third drop, scored 57 runs to take the total of the home side to 262 against Jamaica's 255.

Tagenarine, like his father, is a left-hander and recently captained the West Indies at Under-19 level. His 50 against Jamaica the third half-century of his 16-match fledgling career.

It is for the first time that a father-son duo have notched half-centuries in the same first-class match since George Gunn and his son George Vernon made struck tons in a match for Nottinghamshire in 1931.

The father-son duo have now joined the likes of Walter Hadlee-Sir Richard Hadlee and Sunil Gavaskar-Rohan Gavaskar to play a cricket match together.

In his illustrious career, Chanderpaul scored a total of 11,867 runs in 164 Test matches and is just 87 runs from surpassing Brian Lara as the leading West Indies run-scorer of all time.
