Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien on Wednesday confirmed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has received an invitation to attend an event to mark former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru's 125th birth anniversary, which is being organised by the Congress.
"I can confirm that Mamata Banerjee's office has [received] an invitation for Pandit Nehru's 125-year programme. She has an invitation for the November 17 and 18," O'Brien told ANI.
"What I can't tell you whether she is going or not going. I think she will decide that in the next few days, depending on what next of her programme is," he added.
According to reports, the Congress has invited various like-minded political parties from within the country and leaders from abroad for a conference in the national capital to commemorate the birth anniversary of Nehru.
Apart from Banerjee, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar have also been invited. Conspicuously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's name doesn't feature in the list of invitees.
