The father of legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has passed away at the age of 87 in Buenos Aires.

Don Diego was hospitalized in early June for cardiac problems and had been in a delicate state ever since, Sport24 reported.

The elder Maradona stood by the 1986 World Cup winner throughout a topsy-turvy career during which the player dazzled on the soccer field but also fell victim to drug and alcohol abuse.

In Maradona's words, his father "went in peace with the love of all his children" by his side.
