Mongolia reiterates support to India's candidature for UNSC permanent membership

Mongolia on Sunday reiterated its support to India's candidature for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

A joint statement by both nations stated that India and Mongolia have also agreed to offer reciprocal support for their bids for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for the terms 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 respectively, with India also confirming its support to Mongolia's candidacy to the UN Human Rights Council for the terms 2016-2018.

Noting that the nature and spread of international terrorism in recent years poses a threat to all humanity and requires global resolve and cooperative measures of the international community without double standards or selectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mongolian counterpart Chimed Saikhanbileg agreed to direct concerned officials to work together for the adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism and expressed hope that all safe havens and sanctuaries for terrorists will be wiped out without delay.

Recognizing their shared interests in security of cyber domain, both leaders also decided to work with together in order to preserve the integrity and inviolability of this global common.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi dubbed his visit to Ulaanbaatar as a 'significant milestone' after India and Mongolia signed over 14 agreements to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also visited the Gandantegchinlen monastery in the city, where he interacted with the Hamba Lama and gifted him a sapling of a Bodhi tree.

This was followed by a ceremonial welcome that was accorded to him at the Mongolian State Palace at the Chinggis Khaan Square, where he also signed the guestbook.

Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Ulaanbaatar on Saturday night, is the first Indian prime minister to visit Mongolia.
