Rescue workers were operating on war-footing on Friday to draw out survivors trapped under a rubble of cement and steel after an apartment block that had collapsed here.

One person was reported dead, and so far, about 20 people have been retrieved from the ruins of the 35-year-old building that housed families of municipal corporation officials.

Video footage showed rescuers pulling out an injured girl, a small boy and other survivors from underneath the rubble.

According to eyewitnesses, the building was in dire need of repair.

Earlier this year, at least 70 people had died after a building had collapsed in Thane.

Many Indian buildings do not conform to safety regulations, with owners constructing extra floors or structures without approval from the concerned authorities and beyond the sanctioned floor space index (FSI) or floor area ration (FAR).
