Nitish Govt marks Champaran Satyagraha with foot march

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday morning took part in a foot march here to mark the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha.

Talking to reporters, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the foot-march was organized to remember Mahatma Gandhi's historic statement to a court on April 18, 1917, which is the core of Mahatma's Satyagrah in Champaran.

"Gandhiji visited Motihari on April 15, 1917. When he came to know that injustice was meted out to a farmer of Jasauli Patti then he undertook padyatra from Motihari to Jasauli Patti. On the way to Jasualipatti village, Gandhiji was served order by government of leaving district by first available train. Gandhiji returned to Motihari and gave letter of his intension of not obeying the order to District Magistrate W B Hekak," said Nitish.

"Appeared in the court of Sub Divisional Magistrate of Motihari and gave a historic statement of reason for not obeying the order. Case was adjourned till 21st April, but the British Government withdrew the order on April 20," said Nitish.
