Opposition leaders in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and Sharad Yadav on Friday demanded immediate resignation of former Supreme Court Justice A.K Ganguly, who has been accused of sexually harassing a law intern.
At present, Ganguly holds the position of Chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC).
Raising the issue in the parliament, Swaraj said Ganguly should either resign or be removed from the WBHRC.
"Justice Ganguly shouldn't remain on his post for one more moment," said Sushma.
Furthermore, JD-U leader Sharad Yadav said Ganguly should resign gracefully instead of delaying it.
"He should immediately give his resignation. It is better if he resigns gracefully. Delaying it will only cause him more problems," said Yadav.
The intern's allegations created a media furor with female lawyers and activists calling for the country's top court to investigate the incident and for the accused retired judge to be named publicly.
The Supreme Court set up a three-judge panel, which heard testimonies from both and submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India, P. Sathasivam, naming Ganguly as the accused.
It is for the first time that the Supreme Court had set up an internal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations against a former judge.
