A division of the Pentagon is reportedly working on a technology that could make biodegradable electronics dissolve after someone triggers them to do so.

The US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), research company SRI International and manufacturing enterprise Honeywell are together working on the 'Vanishing Programmable Resources' programme to develop such electronics.

According to Mashable, SRI International received a 4.7 million dollars government contract to help out DARPA.

The US Department of Defense wants to use disappearing electronics on the battlefield, so the military can be more environmentally friendly, as well as protect potentially important information.

The programme's page on DARPA's website read that it is nearly impossible to track and recover every device, resulting in unintended accumulation in the environment and potential unauthorized use and compromise of intellectual property and technological advantage.

The report added that the organizations plan to first build a vanishing silicon air battery, although its release date is unknown.
