The ninth day of the French Open has been called off without seeing a single ball being hit on Monday due to incessant rain, making it the first complete washout at Roland Garros since 2000.

"Due to weather, there will be no matches played at #RG16 today," said the tournament's Twitter handle.

World number one Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, the top-ranked women's singles player, had been due to play their fourth-round matches but will now have to try again on Tuesday.

The weather forecast for tomorrow has predicted that heavy rains could continue until Tuesday afternoon.
