President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Kabul.

In his condolence message, the president said, "I am shocked and saddened to learn of the barbaric terrorist attack in Kabul today. The government and the people of India stand strongly by the government and people of Afghanistan. Such senseless acts of terror and violence must be met with determination and collective action. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the attack and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured".

Twin explosions targeting a police convoy killed at least 40 policemen, who were on their way from Wardak province to Kabul.

According to the preliminary reports dozens of others have also sustained injuries.

Officials said the incident took place in Qala-e-Haidar Khan village in Company area in Kabul city and that the convoy was transporting newly graduated police officers, reported the Khaama Press.

A security official confirmed that a suicide bomber targeted a vehicle belonging to the security forces and added that the bus carrying police cadets were targeted as they were on their way.

The officials however did not disclose any reports of causalities so far.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
