World number one Andy Murray's hopes of clinching his first Australian Open title were shattered after he suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of world number 50 Mischa Zverev of Germany in a four-set thriller here on Sunday.

The top-seed dropped serve eight times to go down 5-7, 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 against Zverev in an exhilarating fourth-round contest that lasted more than three and a half hour on Rod Laver Arena.

Murray was aiming for his first Australian Open title after finishing runner-up here five times (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016).

In another men's singles clash, fourth-seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland booked his place in the quarterfinals after battling past Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).

The 2014 Australian Open champion will now lock horns with France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in last-four.
