Police Commissioner Pandurang Rane on Friday said the shutdown called by various political organisations and farmers across the Mumbai- Karnataka region has been peaceful so far with no untoward incident reported.

Tension gripped the region as the people demanded immediate completion of the Kalasa-Banduri nallaproject across Mahadayi River to cater to the drinking water needs of Mumbai-Karnataka region.

"In view of the shutdown today in Hubli and Dhadwad city, the situation is absolutely peaceful. The members of some organisation are observing this shutdown. The shops are closed and KSRTC buses are not plying, otherwise it is peaceful," said Rane.

The locals took out a procession led by Janata Dal (Secular) leaders Basavaraj Horatti and Rajanna Koravi which converged at the Rani Channamma Circle.

The leaders submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister urging the State and Union Government to provide access adequate drinking water.

The police have clamped prohibitory orders in Nargaund and Navalgund towns to prevent any unwanted incident.
