South African pace express Dale Steyn became his country's second highest wicket taker as he spearheaded the hosts' bowling charge to reduce West Indies to 276/6 at stumps on the first day of the third Test on Friday.

Steyn caught and bowled West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin for 53, five overs from the close to claw back some of the advantage produced by a spirited batting performance by the tourists in near perfect conditions at the iconic Newlands ground.

Ramdin looked to be justified in his decision to bat first as Leon Johnson, Devon Smith, Marlon Samuels and Jermaine Blackwood weighed in with runs before Steyn claimed his second wicket of the day, Sport24 reported.

Steyn moved past Makhaya Ntini on to 391 test wickets, and now only trails Shaun Pollock in the list of South Africa's all-time best bowlers.

Johnson top-scored for West Indies hitting 54 runs off 84 deliveries, surviving a review by a matter of millimeters when he padded up to an in-swinging ball from Morne Morkel when on four.

Samuels fell seven runs short of his half-century as he was out for 43 after an injudicious shot saw him caught in the covers off part-time bowler Stiaan van Zyl, who claimed a first Test wicket.

Blackwood, recalled to the team, would resume on Saturday on his unbeaten 45, the report added.
