Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat today fired salvos at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not taking any action against MP Tapas Pal for his derogatory rape remarks.
Karat told ANI, "Mamata Banerjee is the same Chief Minister who had a university professor jailed for posting a cartoon which she didn't like. TMC has orchestrated this entire apology drama to save their MP. Tapas Pal should be suspended. How can a person who has incited his supporters to rape women, sit in the parliament?"
Tapas Pal had invited widespread condemnation by saying that he would send his boys to the opposition leaders' homes to rape their women. The Trinamool Congress had subsequently sought his apology after widespread condemnation of the derogatory remarks.
Tapas Pal had later tendered an unconditional apology which the party had accepted.
