Sri Lanka spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan has said umpires have to use technology on low catches rather than taking the word of the player.

The issue started after England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler claimed a low catch off David Warner's edge in the 14th over of the opening one-day international at the MCG on SUnday. Warner walked only for the dismissal to be reversed by the third umpire.

Buttler claimed a low catch and Warner was happy to go after Buttler indicated the ball had carried.

However, the on-field umpires referred the incident to third umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who overruled the decision of onfield umpires, News.com.au reports.

Muralitharan said you can't take the word, because at the moment everyone is very, very competitive, and added that players are not cheating but almost everyone feels that they have taken the catch.

He further said if the umpire thinks it's the right way going with the technology, so you go with the technology.

Warner was on 22 at the time, while Australia were 0-82 chasing 270 for victory. The reprieve allowed the home side to add 163 for the first wicket before Warner was out for 65.
