Manchester United football team manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that it would take a miracle for the club to win the Premier League, but insisted that he is in the mood to achieve the impossible.
United travel to Sunderland on Sunday with questions being raised about Van Gaal's ability to resurrect a team that finished seventh last season and his latest confession about the weakness of the squad he inherited will add to those doubts.
Van Gaal believes that he will get it right and has been assured by United's American owners and vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he would be given more time than David Moyes to do so, The Mirror reported.
But the Dutchman's brutally honest assessment of the current state of United will shock fans. Van Gaal said that to win the Premier League this season would be a miracle, but added that is not to say that it is not possible.
Van Gaal said that it is always possible, but it shall be very difficult. He added that he thinks the Glazer family understands this or he would not have accepted the job.
The Dutchman said that he has discussed everything with the owners, adding that they have had long discussions where he has shown himself.
Van Gaal said that he is always open to the Glazer family and that is why they discussed three years, not one year. He said that they wanted to know what are the consequences when they are hiring him and he has told them.
He said that in his experience, in his former clubs, it was always that the start was very difficult.
Van Gaal won championships in his first seasons at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
And he added that he thinks that a manager should he judged in his second season. Nevertheless, Van Gaal said that what he has experienced was that he was champion in Barcelona and Munich in his first season and so it is possible.
