China's President Xi Jinping was named the chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Wednesday during the first plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee.

The Gobal Times reported that Xu Qiliang and Zhang Youxia have been named vice chairmen of the CMC.

Addressing the plenary session, President Xi Jinping said the coming five years will see several important junctures and sign posts.

"As I look ahead to the next five years, I see several important junctures and sign posts," Xi told media in the company of members of the Standing Committee of the 19th CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.

Stating that the coming five years would be the period in which the time frames of the "Two Centenary Goals" will converge, Xi said that "not only must we deliver the first centenary goal, we must also embark on the journey toward the second centenary goal."

"With decades of hard work, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era. In this new context, we must get a new look and, more importantly, make new accomplishments," he added.

The 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held its first plenary session on Wednesday morning and elected Xi Jinping as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Xi presided over the plenum attended by 204 members and 172 alternate members of the CPC Central Committee.

The plenum elected members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and its Standing Committee.

Based on the nomination of the Political Bureau Standing Committee, it endorsed members of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and decided on members of the CPC Central Military Commission.

It also approved the election of the secretary, deputy secretaries and members of the Standing Committee of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).
