In an aggressive development plans, the German luxury carmaker Audi is all set to expand its Q-Series lineup with the addition of new member Q1. Audi AG has confirmed its plans of launching an entry level crossover, which will roll off the assembly lined in Ingolstadt in 2016.
Ruper Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG said, “The Audi Q1 is part of our broad-based SUV strategy. It is designed on the basis of the modular transverse engine concept and will round off our Q series at the bottom end”.
Set to go into production in 2016, the Q1 will be an attractive entry into the Q family. The company hasn't revealed much about the styling and specification of the car but the teaser image shows that the car will be a five-door crossover. The crossover will have an angular styling and features plastic body cladding. An aggressive looking grille, new headlights and muscular fenders are also visible from teaser.
It is also speculated that the new Q1 crossover will be based on the Volkswagen Polo and it measures 3.8 metres long. We already know that the next generation Polo will come by 2015, so possibilities are there that both models could share the platform.
Engine details are speculative- the new Q1 Crossover could get the 1.4-litre TFSI, a 1.4-litre TDI and a rage-topping SQ1 producing 231bhp. The company could also introduce a hybrid version of the Q1, which is expected to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 109bhp electric motor, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
