BMW India has started locally producing the X1 at its facility in Chennai. The German automaker launched the new-generation X1 at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo at Rs 29.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The model rivals the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class and Audi Q3. The first unit of the locally made X1 rolled off the assembly line in the presence Dr. Jochen Stallkamp, MD, BMW Plant Chennai.
Powering the 2nd generation X1 is a 1,995cc, 4-cylinder diesel engine that puts out around 190PS of power at 4000rpm and 400Nm of torque at 1750-2500rpm, with the motor paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The car does the 0-100kmph run in a claimed 7.8 seconds and it can hit a top speed of 219kmph.
The new X1’s length has reduced by 36mm when compared to the old model, but it is now 53mm taller and 21mm wider. The wheelbase has also increased by a healthy 90mm, resulting in improved cabin space, while the boot space goes up by 85 litres as well. The car is also lighter by around 135kg. It gets new bumpers, optional full LED headlights, a restyled front grille, updated wing mirrors, new tail lights and redesigned alloy wheels. The overall design is also more SUV-like.
The model is offered in 4 variants – sDrive20d Expedition, sDrive20d xLine, xDrive20d xLine and xDrive20d M Sport. The feature list includes 6 airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), cornering brake control (CBC) and dynamic stability control (DSC) with dynamic traction control (DTC). You also get rain-sensing wipers, electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs, a 6.5-inch multimedia screen, USB/Aux/Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control.
