May 2013 was not a favourable month for most automakers including Maruti Suzuki India, which inspected a drop of 14.4 per cent. In fact, sales of some of its top-selling diesel vehicles including Swift and Ertiga too declined. So, to equalize things, MSI is planning to launch the Ertiga CNG version by next week.
According to a report published in Financial Express, Ertiga CNG will be available in the LXi and VXi trims, but not in the top of the line ZXi trim. The Ertiga CNG variant would cost about Rs 30,000 more than the regular variant in the same trim. Why it is an important move is the fact that the demand for diesel vehicles has been declining for a couple of months, due to rising diesel prices, so a CNG would be right product to pitch to the people who are looking for cheaper fuel options. And Maruti Suzuki Ertiga will be the second vehicle to have all three fuel options, the other vehicle is SX4.
“The idea has been to have two fuel options available for every model. Normally, we offer a CNG option only on models that have a petrol as a lot of work is needed to modify the engine and the suspension,” a senior company official said.
