It’s official! Skoda will begin global sales of the Kodiaq SUV at the beginning of 2017 and depending on the market, it will be launched with a choice of two TDI (diesel) and three TSI (petrol) engines. The confirmation comes through just a few days after the Czech automaker released official teaser images of the new model, in the build-up to its global debut that will take place in September this year.
The most powerful motor in the SUV will be a 2.0-litre TSI that produces 180PS of power. Yes, while front-wheel drive comes as standard, it will be available with an all-wheel drive set-up as well. Transmission duties will be handled by a six-speed manual or a DSG automatic gearbox. The Kodiaq will also come equipped with a drive mode selector and dynamic chassis control (DCC), which enables drivers to alter the behaviour of the steering, accelerator, DSG transmission and suspension, based on the driving scenario.
Based on the VisionS concept, the Kodiaq slots in above the Yeti in Skoda’s model range. The brand will be emphasizing on infotainment, assistance systems and connectivity in a bid to raise the SUV’s appeal, specifically to younger buyers. The infotainment systems are based on the Volkswagen Group’s second-generation modular infotainment matrix with capacitive touchscreens being offered across the range. The top-of-the-range Columbus and the Amundsen systems come with a WiFi hotspot as well. The SmartLink platform, which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink and SmartGate, is optional for the entry-level Swing infotainment system and comes as standard with a more advanced set-up.
The Kodiaq will function as an SUV counterpart to the Superb, with rivals in India including the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
