Don't want to miss the best from Business Standard?

As the compact SUV segment is doing wonders for the Ford and Renault, many manufacturers are now trying to cash on the opportunity developed in this new segment. Volkswagen has already launched its Cross Polo, a rugged version of Polo hatch, while Toyota is all set to bring its Etios Cross on 7th May. We had already covered a brief comparison between the Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen Cross Polo focusing exterior and interior design along with the engine and the power development. In this comparison, we compare comfort and safety features of both the cars.

Comfort and Interior Features:

The interior of Volkswagen Cross Polo features trendy color scheme and high quality material used inside is scratch resistant. The steering wheels and gear knob is covered with leather cover, while the comfortable wide seats are covered with “Livon” titanium upholstery. In order to entertain its passengers, the car carries 2DIN music system with AUX, USB, SD card and Bluetooth connectivity that can also be controlled with the steering mounted controls. The driver aided features include side mirrors which can be electrically adjusted from inside only. The “Climatronic” Automatic Climate Control cools the car in a very efficient way. The instrument panel is raised along with the seat which gives a feel of huge car and also improves the road vision. The rear seats can be folded to increase the boot space. Luggage compartment cover/ parcel tray is also provided.

While the interiors of the Etios Cross resemble much to its bigger siblings Etios and Etios Liva. The only difference is that the Cross gets the piano black finish rather than company's favourite black and beige or grey interiors. The centrally mounted instrument cluster looks a bit unique and the built-in music system comes with USB and Bluetooth connectivity along with the control mounted on steering wheels. The rear seats are comfortable even on long runs but the legroom can be a bit tight for a six footer. The electrically adjusted ORVMs are similar to that of Cross Polo. Parking sensor helps in parking the car in congested places while the rear defogger provided better visibility in cold or moist climate.  The 60:40 rear spilt is again a common feature in both the cars.

Safety and Security

Safety and security of both the cars are top notch. In Polo Cross, the speed sensitive power steering wheels responds with just a hint of turn. The list of safety features includes front under-body guard, height adjustable headrests (front and rear), electronic engine immobilizer with a floating code. In terms of emergency, a special emergency exit is also provided. The ABS with EBD provides better handling when hard brakes are applied. The dual front airbags, pinch guard safety for all 4 power windows, central locking and high mounted stop lamp are among more sophisticated safety functions.

While the Japanese manufacturer worked hard to secure Etios Cross by using maximum safety points. The dual front SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbag provides a cushion for head and neck in case of front, side or rear impact. The ABS with EBD, immobilizer system, central locking system are some other key features. However, the car is still to be launched and it is expected that it will carry a set of ventilated disc brakes, whereas its rear wheels have been equipped with solid drum brakes.

Verdict:

Both the cars has a real neck to neck competition in terms of safety and interior features. However, the eventual deciding criteria would be the pricing of Toyota Etios Cross.
