Toyota has showcased a functional prototype of what it believes to be the Ultimate Utility Vehicle, at the ongoing SEMA motor show in Las Vegas. The car looks like Batman’s rendition of a school running soccer-mom’s minivan. The car features a “collapsed sun” LED bar mounted on the top, which is capable of lighting the darkest roads like a Christmas tree. The car also features monumental off-roading tyres, which add to the “urban assault vehicle” appeal of the car, exuded by the matte black paint job. At the front, the car features a unique redesign of the bison bumper and features an integrated winch.
The car finds its foundation in the Toyota Tacoma 4X4, which bestows it with impressive off-roading characteristics and has a 'bolted on' Toyota Sienna body shell. The UUV incorporates four-link long-travel suspension which increases the ride-height by four inches, 33×22 Nitto Mud Grappler tires wrapped around 22×12-inch Monster Energy 539B off-road wheels, which when coupled together, gives the car 15.75 inches of wheel travel.
The interior of the car features Flir M-324xp night vision camera system with high-definition recording capability, Wi-Fi Internet access, 17-inch monitor, 60-inch Sony LED TV with 2,500-watt JBL audio system, TracVision mobile satellite television receiver and multiple USB ports amongst other cutting edge equipment.
Considering that this is a minivan mated to an off-roader’s chassis, one can contemplate a crossover version of upcoming Innova and Fortuner, which will definitely be a looker. After all, Innova is expected to feature a 149PS 2.4 liter engine, which is quite comparable to the 187PS 2.7 liter power-plant that powers Sienna in the US and Fortuner finds its foundations in the Hilux pick-up that is globally revered for its off-roadability.
There are no revelations pertaining to what the UUV features under the hood, but if the 850bhp Camry showcased by Toyota at last year’s SEMA motor show is of any indication, then the power-plant will definitely not disappoint. The Ultimate Utility Vehicle will be driven through North America before it moves on to Canada and then Alaska after being showcased at the SEMA motor show. The American part of the journey will be covered over 16,500 miles.
