Key indices slide further in volatile trade

A bout of volatility was witnessed as key benchmark indices hit fresh intraday low in morning trade. At 10:16 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 37.10 points or 0.14% at 25,827.37. The Nifty 50 index was down 13.45 points or 0.17% at 7,824.10.

The BSE Sensex fell 73.53 points, or 0.28% at the day's low of 25,790.94 in morning trade. The Nifty 50 fell 24.45 points, or 0.31% at the day's low of 7,813.10 in morning trade. The BSE Sensex rose 25.89 points, or 0.10% at the day's high of 25,890.36 in early trade. The Nifty 50 index rose 5.85 points, or 0.07% at the day's high of 7,843.40 in early trade.

The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,137 shares rose and 746 shares fell. A total of 143 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.20%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.27%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.

In overseas markets, Asian shares were mixed today, 18 November 2015, as investors remain cautious over the latest global geopolitical developments in the wake of Paris terror attacks. US stocks gave up earlier gains to end almost flat yesterday, 17 November 2015, as falling oil prices overshadowed strong earnings from giant retailers Wal-Mart Stores and Home Depot Inc. The evacuation of a soccer stadium in Germany also rekindled terror fears, unnerving investors.

Shares of pharmaceutical companies were mixed. IPCA Laboratories (up 1.51%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (up 1.30%), Lupin (up 0.49%), Divi's Laboratories (up 0.44%), GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (up 0.21%), Cipla (up 0.16%) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (up 0.03%), edged higher. Strides Arcolab (down 0.09%), Wockhardt (down 0.2%), Aurobindo Pharma (down 0.4%), Cadila Healthcare (down 0.78%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (down 0.84%) and Piramal Enterprises (down 1.13%), edged lower.

Telecom shares were in demand. MTNL (up 2.41%), Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (up 1.22%), Bharti Airtel (up 1.17%), Reliance Communications (up 0.76%) and Idea Cellular (up 0.50%), edged higher.
